Statement on the Death Penalty

The Blackmun dissent is consistent with the cjstudents.com position on the death penalty. While a range of links follow, we believe it is important to point out that the effectiveness of the death penalty, for any purpose other than specific deterrence and revenge, has not been demonstrated by criminological research. Every crime control objective that is reached through the death penalty can be effectively addressed by other means.

Death penalty sites are prevalent on the internet. These sites include a range of arguments. Many of these arguments are based on respected research data. Others are based on opinion. We encourage you to take an open mind into the research process and ask whether one side of the argument relies on opinion and emotion rather than research and data.

ACLU Death Penalty Campaign-American Civil Liberties Union site offers information against the death penalty.  Many reports and statistics are provided.

Amnesty International-This site provides information on the death penalty in such areas as background and current information.  It also provides reports on statistics involved with the death penalty.

Clark County Prosecuting Attorney: The Death Penalty-An awesome site with over 1000 links to sites on the web for both pro and anti web sites.  Provides links to death penalty history, essays on the pros and cons of the death penalty, information on studies, and multiple other links.  A very, very comprehensive site.

Death Penalty Information Center-This site offers a great deal of information on the death penalty.  Information is provide for such topics as race, women, clemency, deterrence, and multiple other aspects involved with the death penalty.

Death Penalty News and Updates-This site provides information on current news involving the death penalty in the United States.  Also provided are links to death penalty statistics over the past several+ years and information involving pending executions.

Derechos Human Rights Death Penalty Page-This site provides multiple links to different death penalty sites on the web.  Included are links to both abolitionist sites and some pro-death penalty sites.

Ethics: Punishment and the Death Penalty-A good site with lots of links to pro-death penalty and anti-death penalty sites.  Also provides links to court decisions, legislative information and statistics on the death penalty.

Justice Center Website: Focus on the Death Penalty-This site is maintained by the University of Alaska Anchorage and is a comprehensive site on capital punishment and the death penalty debate in Alaska and the U.S., presenting resources on both sides of the issue.

Southern Center for Human Rights Death Penalty Information Page-This site provides information on U.S. Supreme Court cases regarding the death penalty as well as articles and reports on the subject that are available in MS Word format or PDF.
